Temecula was once inhabited by the Temecula Indians. Franciscan padres first visited the region in 1797. Despite recent modernization, the town still maintains a charming feel. You can visit Old Town Temecula, the town’s historic section. This area includes old western buildings plus restaurants and shops. The town is constructing a new plaza, civic center, and stage shop, with 19th century-style buildings. There are many 1950’s style diners along the west side of the freeway and the Old Town Rootbeer Company serves new and vintage drinks.
Education Temecula Valley Unified School District serves the city. It has 17 elementary schools, six middle schools and three high schools. There are also 12 private schools within the city. Temecula is an hour away from University of California Riverside. The university, known for its diversity and NCAA Division I teams, has nearly 15,000 undergraduates.
Recreation You can enjoy the Temecula Valley’s numerous wineries - over thirty of them have wine tasting rooms - or watch hot air balloons soar over the region at the Balloon and Wine Festival every June. At night, you can visit the Palomar Observatory, operated by the California Institute of Technology. The Pechanga Resort and Casino hosts a Vegas-like experience with a night club and restaurants. In addition, Old Town’s cultural district has opportunities to visit local theatres and museums. |
